Croatia enters the Schengen Area and adopts Euro

After ten years of becoming a EU member, at the beginning of 2023 Croatia joined the Schengen Area and adopted the Euro currency, starting a new era of European integration and cooperation.

On January 1st 2023 Croatia entered the European Schengen area and adopted the Euro currency joining the Eurozone.

Controls were removed at 73 border crossings between Croatia and Slovenia and Hungary.

This act represents more than ending border controls, this is a definitive affirmation of Croatian European identity and strengthens the bonds of its citizens with the European Union.

The Schengen Area is a zone of (now) 27 European countries where the free movement of people is allowed without the need for a passport or border checks. This means that citizens of Schengen countries can travel, live and work in any other Schengen country without any restrictions.

Joining the Schengen Area and the Euro currency brings a range of benefits for Croatia and its citizens. By improving travel, boosting tourism, and increasing security and

business opportunities, Croatia will become more integrated and prosperous.

Overall, the adoption of the Euro and Croatia's entry into the Schengen Area are both positive steps for the country and its citizens, including dual citizens who hold a Croatian passport. These moves will make it easier to travel, do business, and enjoy all that Europe has to offer, helping to further strengthen the ties between Croatia and the rest of the world.
