As of January 1, 2020, the Law on amendments and amendments to the Croatian Citizenship Law (Narodne novine 102/19 of October 25, 2019) came into force, which facilitates the acquisition, through naturalization, of citizenship to Croatian immigrants and their descendants.
Some news to highlight:
- The generational limitation in relation to their Croatian ancestor is eliminated (before it was up to the third generation, that is, even the great-grandchildren);
- The requirement of knowledge of the language, culture, and social system of Croatia is eliminated.
- Amendments to the Citizenship Law increase the age limit for registering Croatian citizens to 21 years when they are born abroad if at least one of their parents is a Croatian citizen at the time of their birth.
- The acquisition of Croatian citizenship by birth is also allowed for minors if one of their parents acquired Croatian citizenship as an emigrant or descendant of a Croatian emigrant or by belonging to the Croatian people.
These amendments to the citizenship law strengthen the ties of Croatian descendants with the Croatian culture and nation and are expected to increase the inmigration to Croatia of Croatian descendants coming from the US, the Americas, Australia, and New Zealand.
